070811 - Trent-Severn Waterway

I had a family reunion that Saturday afternoon. Then I headed to the Viamede Marina to party on my buddies boats. The boats were super extra dope. Myself and Mike Magreehan jammed until the early late morn. I got to freestyle over acoustic guitars for at least an hour. Super fun. It wasn't a 'show', but I played on a patio overlooking a kick -assed lake in front of about 40 people who were quite attentive.

Thanks to Paul 'Zapp' Zapatol and Chris Annette for having kick ass boats I could pass out in.

070810 - Toronto, On Live Recording

I arrived at Jungle Funk Productions Studio's at 3:30. We worked out all the kinks for a live-studio-audience-recording. At 7:30, my best friends arrived and we polished off a big bottle of tequila. Then I started to record my Jimi Maze record. The party went way later than planned.

It was one of the coolest parties ever, though I might be biased.

070809 - Toronto, On Squiggfest

http://www.torontounderground.ca/day1.html

I hosted squiggfest and got to perform a couple of songs. The night was a collective of dancer's, visual artists and musicians. Very cool.

070801 - New Brunswick to Montreal, PQ

I'm in a parking lot in Ottawa, posting this blog. I'm back in my home province.

Um, woo hoo?

070729 - Campbellville, NB

I had to finally escape Charlottetown. PEI was just too perfect.

I spent the night in a parking lot in Campbelltown, New Brunswick, where I was able to MacGyver-styles fix my camera and steal wifi internet.

070728 - Prince Edward Island p3

Again, I spent the day at the Tracadie Beech. It was super hot, and humid in the city. The ice-cold northern current of the Atlantic Ocean was perfect relief.

On my way to Fredericton, I headed back into Charlottetown to take care of a few loose ends. That’s when I ran into my buddy Andrew Devillers from Toronto.

He’s in the band The Exchanges. Canary Mine and Exchanges have played a handful of gigs together back in Toronto.

He was playing Brennan’s that night. After the show, we went to a house party overlooking the Charlottetown Harbour. The moon, and it’s reflection were placed perpendicular to the back deck, making it quite scenic. We hung out with Charlottetown locals until sunrise.

Andrew passed out in the front seat of my van, so we had breakfast at Hunter’s Ale House the next morning. There was a camera that night that I am trying to get photo’s from.

Here's a link to the video Andrew made a week earlier in Quebec.

070727 - Charlottetown p2

The owner of Brennan’s Pub said that I should try to play again on Friday night. So, I spent the day at the beech in the blistering heat, sheltered within my open van, writing tunes, napping, girl watching, swimming.

That night, I asked the band Sleep To Dream if I could open for them. They were from Halifax and had the tightest purest rock tone that I’ve ever heard. It was like Soundgarden meets ZZ Top on Stan Rogers boat. Exceptional.

During my brief sound check, a waitress knocked my camera off the bar, breaking it. I put on a good set, but all the while I was thinking “OMG, my camera’s eft.”

Into the morning, Sleep to Dream and Jimi Maze hung out, relatively sober until the sun rose. I wish I had some pics!

The lowest point of my tour.

070726 - Charlottetown

** More video blogs are coming. I'm having some issues with missing chords which I hope to clear up in the morning.**

I arrived at Brennan’s Pub. No poster posted and the promoter had moved away. One of the bands had cancelled, the other band had been reduced to a solo act.

Brad Perry opened the night solo. He was awesomely talented, as seems the norm in the Maritimes.

I played a long set, which was enjoyable.

Then I got invited to an all night party of creative painters and musicians. We got really eft up and played Frisbee until the sun rose. It was quite enchanting, as are many things in Charlottetown, PEI.

070725 - Antigonish

Antigonish - Opportunity knocks me out.

I entered the Piper’s Pub to have a quick brew, as I was busking in Antigonish. The entertainer’s on stage were looking flustered trying to get the audio equipment to work. I’m a sound guy by profession, so I gave them a hand, and gave them a nice sound. In return, the Celtic musicians said “hey, do you want to play a set tonight?”

Of course I did.

So, I’m on stage, playing my acoustic guitar, warming myself up. A few songs in, I did my Kitchener-Waterloo-Polka-Rap special remix of Maybe Yo’ Momma. Some hippy chicks started dancing up front. A big Jamaican woman started dancing on stage.

So, I decided to play Cool Breeze, a pure hiphop song. I plugged in the computerized beat and started rapping. The big Jamaican woman started booty-rubbing on me and dancing all crazy. The hippy chicks are loosing it. The crowd is entertained… so I think.

At the end of the song, a big bouncer in a blue shirt grabs me by arm, drags me offstage and says “we don’t play that kind of music here”.

I sat outside, humiliated and confused, and went back in to retrieve my shit. The bartender gave me a beer and apologized. “We’re just not that kind of bar”.

I didn’t sleep well that night, so I drove to the Pictou County ferry to PEI.

0707 - Quebec City to Halifax

Like old Sam The Record Man said "I said it, I did it". Here's the promised video of Quebec City to Halifax. RIP Honest Ed Mirvish.

I miss a mild-temperatured Toronto, but I'm glad to be away from the smog!

070708 - Halifax, Nova Scotia

A quick review of Halifax.

I had an amazing time with old friends and new.

The music is sooo good in Halifax. The general attitude in great. I don't know why I don't live here.

070707 - Halifax Van Cleanup

A little tour of my van, where I sleep, eat, but I don't drink there.

070706 - Moncton, New Brunswick

Hey, I write this from my Mudder's hometown of Baddeck. Life's getting too busy to keep a detailed roadblog but...

I pulled into Moncton to busk. I think this was my favorite gig so far.

Keep your comments coming, I like them.

070701 - Canada Day in Quebec

I woke up too hungover to stay in big city Canada Day Ottawa. So I headed to Quebec where I found an awesome campsite called La Place Rouge.

I spent my morning listening to Stuart MacLean's Vinyl Cafe Canada Day Special. He had a band playing medley's of great Canadian Songs by great Canadian Songwriters. It was awesome! Amazing! I had music chill's all morning.

Driving aimlessly along the Quebec-Ontario border I found the perfect campsite and settled down.

This is a video I made with some BMX kids. I'll have a slideshow of the rest of my day later.

070630 - Ottawa

I spent my day travelling from smalltown to smalltown on the Rideau Canal. It turned 175 and became a UN World Heritage Landmark that day. Glad I could be there for it.

I rocked out a show with Shannon Rose and The Thorns, The Mantra, and Mile Over Mecca in Ottawa.

070629 - Marrickville

Today will be slightly infamous as the day the First Nations had a National Day of Protest.

For those in other countries, the Canadian Government has a lot of unfulfilled promises to the peoples who first inhabited this land. The Natives. The Indians.

So, I had a lot of trouble going east out of Toronto. I was 3 hours late for the gig in Marrickville but I still got to play.

I played at a Youth Community Centre. The crowd was the teenaged kids of Marrickville.

Marrickville is beautiful, so I’m staying in my van, on the street overnight as so I can hang out here tomorrow. We’re not too far from Ottawa, where I play tomorrow.

Introduction from Toronto Home

Welcome to the log for my Jimi Maze Down Home(y) Tour.

I will be keeping an mix of stories and pictures and video of my first official tour to my Mother’s Mudderland, being Cape Breton Island.

To start off, I’m busy getting my shit together in Toronto, in the Canadian Province of Ontario. Toronto is divided into mini-country neighborhoods like lil’ India, and Chinatown, and lil’ Korea and lil’ Italy. I’ve been living in “lil’ Jamaica” for about 2 years now. My home is littered with undies and socks and guitar cords and CDs as I pack for a month’s trip.

Yesterday, I made this test video about my Toronto home.
